The Road to Unfreedom by Timothy Snyder (2018)

I recently returned to this book, which I initially read after its release in 2018 when I was working on my undergraduate thesis about fascism in Russia.

Synder describes the descent of Russia into "the politics of eternity"—a political framework that rejects progress and historical causality in favor of a mythic national identity that deliberately obfuscates truth.

Synder warned in 2018 that Russia's attempts to influence Western democracies, such as during the 2016 U.S. election cycle, threaten the foundation of our democracy.

In light of President Trump's recent regurgitation of Kremlin falsehoods about the war in Ukraine, it is useful to return to this text, which, while lacking the most recent context about Russia and Ukraine, nevertheless elucidates the philosophical conflicts at play beneath the surface of the news cycle.
